Dollar Store Christmas Ornaments

November 27, 2012 By Colleen Jorgenson Leave a Comment

As soon as the dollar store put Christmas merchandise on the shelves, I was there to snag a few things. Not that I need them, of course.

Although, one can never have too many Christmas ornaments, can one? Not in my world.

I resisted the sparkly tree ornaments, festive mugs and plates, and other goodies lining the store shelves. (On this first store visit.) But when I saw these 14” felt ornaments I had to have a couple. I had no idea what I was going to do with but, you know, they only cost a dollar. If nothing else, I could always use them to make a pillow cover.

Then inspiration struck. Well, not inspiration exactly. More like procrastination. I was in the middle of dragging out all of the Christmas decorations, running out of energy, and I saw the felt ornaments sitting there. Hmm . . . The paint wheels starting turning and the decorating stalled.

I laid them on top of some black poster board I hadn’t used for Halloween. My ‘helper’ made sure it didn’t move.

Meet Sadie, my mom’s boston terrier. Although at times it’s questionable whose dog she is. *ahem

After tracing the ornaments I cut them out and headed outside, straight for my spray paint stash. With Sadie in tow.

I started with this pretty Caramel Latte by Krylon. It was pretty but not glitzy. Nope. Time to bring out the glitz ‘guns’.

I wasn’t sure which would give the most sparkle – Glitter Blast or cheapo gold glitter – so I used both!

Once the glitter was completely dry I squirted craft glue onto one side of the felt ornament, carefully laid it on top of the glittered surface and firmly pressed the edges.

Ok. Not bad.

Now I have two 14” felt & glitter ornaments. What in the world am I gonna do with them?

Mom has a huge wreath. Huge, as in 48” wide. Big! Maybe it needs some 14” ornaments? Huh-uh.

But maybe after the wreath is decorated and lit the ornaments will look ok next to it? Maybe.

Maybe the dining room table! Maybe not.

You can’t even see the glitter unless you’re, like, 7’ tall. Or standing on top of a chair.

Dang. Here I am, I’ve stopped ALL my christmas decorating to make two ADORable dollar store ornaments and I can’t figure out where to put them.

Pffttt. I should’ve just kept going with the wreaths and garlands.

Wait a minute.

How about the entry? That might work.

Oh-yes-I-did grab the gold star, pine garland and gold netting off the table to see if the ornaments would work in the entry.

For now, they have a home here. Subject to change without notice, however. I’m just getting started with decorating.

How about you? Already done? Halfway there? Don’t want to think about it?

Don’t forget the Live Hangout tomorrow!
