I love to paint. Big surprise, huh? But here’s why – no matter how badly I screw something up, all I have to do is add more paint.
Not like woodworking or building. Mess up your measurements and you have to start all over. Usually.
Or pottery. I haven’t actually thrown any pots but I’ve seen lots of times when the spinning wheel gets the best of the pot – or potter – and it reverts all the way back to a blob of clay.
How ‘bout sewing? I made a dress in high school home ec that will be forever notorious because of a little bee applique that had to be applied after my scissors cut thru more than just the interfacing.
And if I mess up baking a cake, I can’t just add more flour or sugar to fix it. Maybe butter though. Hmm, I hadn’t thought about that. But that messes up my whole comparison-thingie. Analogy, I think it’s called.
Ah, but paint, glorious paint. Make all the mistakes you want. It’s okay – just add some more layers.
Like the flowers on the barrister bookcase for the Enchanted Garden nursery. Most of the flowers on the walls were peonies and lavender.
Some little climbing roses were painted on two walls though.
But I knew Mommie’s favorite flowers were peonies and lavender so that’s what I painted.
Okay, so when I started out they were peonies but they kind of wound up looking like roses anyway. Since I’d had a few issues with this bookcase, I just left the peonies-that-became-roses alone and emailed some pics to Mommie & Daddy.
“The lavender’s gotta go.”
Alright, that’s not exactly what they said. They were nice and all, but they wondered if I could remove the lavender if it wasn’t too much trouble.
Heck no!
But I didn’t remove it at all. Just a light sanding, a little more basecoat color, and a few extra leaves.
I still don’t have pictures of the bookcase in the nursery because when I dropped it off the new baby was asleep in there. I promise I’ll share pics of every square inch when I can. Believe me, it’s a beautiful nursery. And not just because of my mural. Everything they’ve placed in the room is just lovely.
I’m curious though . . . which do you prefer – just roses? Or roses and lavender? Would you leave me a comment with your preference?
Thanks!
p.s. If you’re a peony lover, I’m really trying to perfect my paintings of them – in between Fall projects, Halloween and even Christmas.
