Outdoor Christmas Decor

November 18, 2009 By Colleen Jorgenson 17 Comments

Yes, it’s getting that close! Years ago, when I did florals for a living, I used to decorate a lot of private homes, which was always fun . . . and lucrative. Now, I’m down to a my house, my mom’s, a community clubhouse, and a gated community. The community hired me last year to decorate their community entrance and swing gates. Luckily, they hired me again and I’ll be out there early Saturday morning to put up their decorations.

Here’s a pic of the full set up. Each gate is over 18 feet wide, then two pedestrian walk gates, four columns and their name plate.

They were given the option of traditional reds or creams and bronzes, to match the houses, and they chose the latter.

I started with a bronze tulle netting, then a combination of gold and bronze ribbon. Each wreath has oversized, nonbreakable, brushed gold ornaments and light bronze poinsettias.

The walk gates simply have the tulle and ribbon. On top of each column I tied on the ribbon, added pine garland and a few ornaments.

Their community nameplate also got a treatment to match the gates and columns.

Did I mention there are lights on the gates? I don’t have pictures of the effect at night, but I’ll take some this year.

Everything withstood rain, wind, and the constant opening of the gates really well. I was a little panicky and would check on them each week, but was pleasantly surprised at how they held up.

Can’t wait ‘til Saturday! It’s my first Christmas decorating this year. Now I’m anxious for my own house!

Love the simplicity of the decorations on the gate. A lot of glam without all the fuss!

Did you use regular tulle and decorations? I’m curious as to how they withstood the elements. I love the copper color too, I’ve never used that color but it’s lovely. Thanks for stopping by my blog, I will email you with info on the blog template, happy SITS day!

Beautiful decorating! I love the colors! Thanks for stopping by. I do paintings as well as canvas rugs, I haven’t tried anything else, that’s why I’m curious about floorcloths. I would like more information. I’m going to check out your floorcloths. I love your blog!

Thanks, everyone, for your wonderful comments. Encore Bride, the tulle holds up beautifully. This is the 3rd year. I also use shatterproof ornaments. And the poinsettias do fine – no glitter, tho.
CA, make sure and post pics when you get your windows done!
Helene, you don’t have to be creative – just find others’ ideas for inspiration and go with it!
Judy, I’ll email you more info on the floorcloths I’ve painted since it’s been a while.
