How To Paint Faux Leather Photo Frame

May 28, 2013 By Colleen Jorgenson 7 Comments

I hate to break it to you but Father’s Day is three weeks away! Here’s a fun and easy faux finish that’s perfect for the guy in your life.

Don’t let the words “faux finish” scare you off, ok? This is a foolproof paint finish and you only need a few supplies.

Supply List

  • wood photo frame
  • paint brush
  • Chestnut Brown by Martha Stewart Crafts
  • Vanilla Bean by Martha Stewart Crafts
  • Glaze medium
  • sheet of plastic wrap

You can use other colors than brown, if you want. Just use one that’s a medium shade and one that’s darker. I like Martha’s paint because they come in a satin finish but, again, you could use other craft paints too.

Step 1 – basecoat the frame with Chestnut Brown.

Step 2 – Mix Vanilla Bean paint with equal parts of glaze medium.

Step 3 – Paint a small square of glaze/paint mixture on to the frame.

(The photo shows half of the frame painted. Don’t do that. Paint a smaller part. Trust me.)

Step 4 – Place the plastic wrap over the glaze/painted area while still damp.

Step 5 – Press the plastic wrap down firmly onto the frame and then lift. Continue painting the rest of the frame with the glaze/paint, pressing plastic wrap down and lifting until the entire frame is painted.

Done!

How easy is that? Of course, this would work on other things besides photo frames but Dad can always use another frame can’t he?

Now the only question is, which photo should we put inside the frame?

Or do we have to put a picture in it at all?

How about a cute little argyle painting?

#1-Dad-frame

A cute little argyle painting with a special message for Dad!

I’ll be sharing how to paint the argyle in a few days and I’m also making some cute printables so you can make Dad some cupcakes with argyle cupcake toppers too.

I like making cupcakes for Father’s Day. It’s one of those win-win gifts, you know?

But first, make sure you try the faux leather photo frame. Then you can tell everyone you can do faux finishes!

Do you use the same piece of plastic wrap repeatedly, or should you use a clean piece each time?
