Have you entered to win the KindleFire yet? Don’t miss it!
Yes, you read that correctly. Paint a table runner, napkins and wine glasses from the dollar store in 15 minutes. Yes, you can!
So which is more enticing – dollar store table décor or painting it in 15 minutes? Now, if you’re thinking ‘dollar store’ because if you mess up the painting you’re only out a couple of bucks, stop.
You can’t mess this painting up. Really.
I came up with these paint projects because my friends Angie & Carolina are doing a weeklong Craft Lightning series on their blogs. A week’s worth of craft projects that you can do in under 15 minutes! Perfect for this time of year. Actually, for any time of year, right?.
So let’s get started. I painted a table runner, two matching napkins and two wine glasses, all from the dollar store. The paint, I had on hand. But even if you had to buy a new color or two, this entire project is still inexpensive.
We’re going to paint Christmas Trees. Really, really easy Christmas trees because they’re “dipdot” trees. You dip, then dot. Repeat. Wanna see?
Paint Dipdot Christmas Tree on Napkin
First, tape the napkin to a piece of cardboard to stabilize the fabric. They’re 100% polyester so they are washable, even after you paint them!
You can use all kinds of things to dipdot with, depending upon the size you want. For the napkins I used a foam ‘spouncer’. You can find these in craft stores and often at the dollar store too. You can also use a pencil eraser or a cotton swab.
I used a dark green paint, dotted the top of the tree and then painted row upon row. If you want space in between your dots and rows, that works too. I just bunched them all together and then sprinkled gold glitter on top.
Yes, I know it’s a napkin. Glitter + napkin = not such a good idea. Usually. But did you know you can seal glitter on fabric with regular ol’ hair spray? Yep, you can. But then you’d have hair spray + napkin. Probably still not a great idea for dining.
But it sure makes a pretty display!
Ok, maybe in your house you actually use napkins for dining, not just for display.
Instead of glitter, you can dipdot with smaller dots. I used gold metallic paint and the end of a paintbrush. Easy-peasy.
The bottom of the tree stumped me. (hardee-har-har) I wanted something but something simple, yet still cute. Like a gold package.
Ok, you could probably just paint a gold box/stump/thing but look at how easy this is – 4 lines, two loops and a couple of tails.
Napkins, done.
After you paint your first tree you’ll feel a lot more comfortable and really be able to move a long with everything else. There is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to paint these. Dip, dot, dip dot, and fill in a triangle shape.
I painted this green tree on the dollar store table runner – that matches the napkins (or do the napkins match the runner?) – while I was waiting for the napkins to dry.
While I was waiting for the runner to dry I painted a gold tree with green ornaments on another napkin.
So then I was waiting for the first napkin to dry, and the runner, and this other napkin. *fingers tapping
How to Dipdot Christmas Trees on Wine Glasses
There are a couple things to keep in mind when painting glass. First, you want to clean the glass with rubbing alcohol and allow to dry completely. Second, use a paint for glass or add a glass medium to regular craft paint. I use Martha Stewart’s multisurface paint which works for glass, fabric, paper, and wood.
Cotton swabs are the perfect size for wine goblet dipdots. Just make sure you keep any paint below the rim.
I used the same green as on the runner and napkins, then red for ornaments, and a little glitter paint on top of the ornaments. For a little bling.
I generally let the paint air-cure for 21 days before using. You can use the oven method to expedite the curing though.
Once the painted napkins & runner are thoroughly dry, heat set your design using an iron and press cloth.
The napkins & runner are washable in cool water. If you do decide to add glitter, wash them separately.
